Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

We are now offering Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) for treatment resistant depression.

We are now offering Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, also known as TMS, for treatment resistant depression (typically diagnosed as Major Depressive Disorder). TMS is a non-invasive, FDA approved, procedure option when treatments like medication or psychotherapy have not been effective and is considered to be a highly effective and safe treatment. The TMS system we use has been in existence for over 30 years and is covered by most insurances (self pay options are also available).

TMS has long lasting positive effects even after treatment has ended and offers a high success rate. Contact us for more information.

How TMS works as a treatment for depression:

"Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy works by sending short magnetic pulses to target the exact areas of the brain affected by depression – stimulating and activating these neural pathways so that the inactive signals begin firing and working again, thus, restoring the emotional control center."

Specific areas addressed usually include the prefrontal cortex because that is often the area that is underactive for people with depression. Magnetic pulses take action on the neurons of the brain by creating small electrical currents to stimulate the brain cells / neurons. Once the neurons are stimulated, this can help potentially increase activity in targeted areas of the brain, such as areas of the brain believed to help in mood regulation.

TMS, over time, can help improve mood and mental functioning. TMS is a non-surgical and non-invasive procedure, therefore no anesthesia is required. TMS sessions typically last about 20 minutes (the initial session lasts longer). TMS treatment typically consists of a daily session for five days a week, for four to six weeks total, though exact length of time will be determined upon examination of severity of the depression.

We are happy to consult with you to determine if TMS is the right choice for you. Contact us for more information.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is defined by the American Psychiatric Association as follows:

"Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious mental disorder that negatively affects how you feel, think, act, and perceive the world.

Nearly three in ten adults (29%) have been diagnosed with depression at some point in their lives and about 18% are currently experiencing depression. Women are more likely than men and younger adults are more likely than older adults to experience depression.

Symptoms of depression symptoms can vary from mild to severe and can appear differently in each person. These symptoms can include:

  • Feeling sad, irritable, empty and/or hopeless.

  • Losing interest or pleasure in activities you once enjoyed.

  • A significant change in appetite (eating much less or more than usual) and/or weight (notable loss or gain unrelated to dieting).

  • Sleeping too little or too much.

  • Decreased energy or increased tiredness or fatigue

  • Increase in purposeless physical activity (e.g., inability to sit still, pacing, handwringing) or slowed movements or speech that are severe enough to be observable by others.

  • Feeling worthless or excessively guilty.

  • Difficulty thinking or concentrating, forgetfulness, and/or difficulty making minor decisions.

  • Thoughts of death, suicidal ideation, or suicide attempts.

Fortunately, depression is very treatable."
